A Brief Encounter

Preparing our brief was actually rather enjoyable. After our first meeting, Rhi had put together a rough outline of what we had previously discussed, this gave us a good basis for our brief. We met in the library as we felt that anywhere else would hold too many distractions!
Instead of breaking the brief up and writing parts individually we decided to construct both the hand-out and the powerpoint as a group. Jane (our lecturer) described the key points that needed to be included in our brief, we used this as a basis for when we began the handout, this contains our detailed brief including information such as ‘who we are’, ‘task and objectives’, ‘what we’re looking for from an agency’,  ‘objectives of the launch’, ‘key challenges’, and ‘what do we want to know from you’. It also contains information regarding competitors, budget and timescale.
From the detailed brief we constructed our powerpoint presentation. We felt a powerpoint was important as it reinforces what is being said and allows our audience to make notes if necessary. We named our company TNR (the new revolution) and took on job roles so that  we could almost ‘get in character’ for the presentation.
Walton says we should ‘develop a PR brief that can help you get exactly what you want’ our brief outlined a number of things that we definitely want fulfilled for our company launch, as well as allowing creativity from the agencies.
After we constructed our brief we felt we needed a little reward so went for a ‘group bonding’ meal at Nandos!

When we presented our brief, I was slightly nervous, however I do not mind public speaking although I am not half as brilliant as Rhi! Kayleigh, Florence, Rhi and I shared the slides equally and hopefully delivered an interesting brief that inspired the agencies to get creative!
Everybody delivered really good presentations that encouraged lots of interest and questioning from the agencies they were pitching to.
The brief that was pitched to us came from ‘Carry On Events’, an events company from Lincoln who organise events such as ‘Carnage’. They want to better the image of ‘Carnage’ in the local community without pushing away their current target market.
Now comes the time to get creative!

  1. The Walton quote is very relevant. A good brief is the basis of how to get what you want.
